Lights Out for the Old-Timers

by Vilhelm Von Kruppenhauser, contributing writer

Forget Lorence's season long dominance.
Disregard Gannon's meteoric rise to 2nd place.
Overlook Cleary's persistance.
Ignore the season long dogfight between Price and Rupp.

There's a new kid in town, Mark Stifter, who won both of his games in his rookie night. Though his court contained two other rookies, Stifter held off vetrans such as Amorosi, O'Gorman and a pugnacious Doran. Stifter is part of Dave Butler's posse, riding in all the way from Akron. Butler himself is finding his feet, posting 21 points over his last 7 games to pull within 9 points of Rob G. who is in the 10th and final playoff spot.

Almost lost in the shuffle is Bob Gannon who has risen from 7th to 2nd place in just 4 weeks, taking a 1st and 2nd place in the two games played before darkness, The night was cut short as the court experiences growing pains with the addition of a new lighting system, expected to be completed by next Monday.

The short night allowed some league business to be discussed as the playoff format was set by volunteer committee. The top 10 season point getters will compete for the 6 slots on the final night, with only 4 advancing to the championship match. Details are expected to be released by the league offices this week.

Commentary: Nine Coolers and Gannon

Buffalo, NY -August 5, 2003 Toting coolers, they came to play, but perfection too, has its limits. As the most exquisite night of the season bounced off the scented grass, the light could not burn bright enough to see us safely through this fair night. Two games were all the croquet gods served up. Still smarting from not being mentioned in last week's newsletter, the night was all Gannon. Gannon, Gannon and Gannon. Gannon this, Gannon that, upside down Gannon, sideways Gannon, and early out Gannon. Lorence was big ugly. Butler showed up with 8. The only thing that could upstage the brilliance of Gannon was the appearance of young children and dogs, Annalize, Ian, Joshua, Cole, Carly, Ringo, Louie and BigDog Nelson. -ed.
